Laura Coffell

Laura was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She attended the University of Winnipeg where she focused her studies on business and communications. Being an extroverted, social person, Laura volunteered with the Business Administration Students' Association, securing sponsorships and planning educational and social events. In 2010, she graduated at the top of her class with a Bachelor of Business Administration and was awarded the Chancellor's Gold Medal for the Highest Standing in Business and Economics. Following graduation, Laura spent four months living on the island of St. Kitts in the West Indies and wrote her Law School Admissions Test in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands.

Laura relocated to Edmonton, Alberta in 2011 to attend law school at the University of Alberta. Throughout law school, Laura continued to be involved with the student community. She acted in roles with the Law Students' Association, the Alberta Law Review, the Canons of Construction student newspaper, and Student Legal Services, among others. As a result of her involvement and impact on the student body, Laura was presented with the Shoctor Award in Law.

Laura earned her Juris Doctor in 2014 and began her career at a large corporate law firm in Calgary, Alberta where she focused on civil litigation and gained a passion for oral advocacy. In 2016, seeking to further her advocacy skills, Laura moved on to work as a Crown Prosecutor with the Alberta Prosecution Service in Wetaskiwin, Alberta. She gained significant experience in a variety of criminal law matters and conducted dozens of trials in both Provincial Court and the Court of Queen's Bench.

Laura returned to Calgary and joined Soby Boyden Lenz in 2018. Laura was drawn to family law by the high degree of client interaction and the ability to help individuals though a potentially difficult period in their lives. Given her experience with criminal law, Laura is no stranger to highly emotional matters. She is able to work with clients in the most difficult of circumstances to reach a favorable result specific to their needs. Laura's eclectic legal background allows her to bring a unique perspective to each of her files. She is well versed in the art of litigation and has impressive trial experience; however always considers the most efficient and cost effective manner to reach a favorable result and will approach an issue with a mind to settle outside the courtroom where appropriate.
