David was born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario. He graduated magna cum laude with a Baccalaureate in Applied Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Ottawa in 2007. David moved to Calgary to attend law school at the University of Calgary in 2007, and earned his Juris Doctor (J.D.) in 2010. David was called to the Alberta Bar in August of 2011.

In law school David developed a passion for helping individuals through negotiation and courtroom litigation. Throughout his time in law school David was a leader of Student Legal Assistance (SLA), which provides legal assistance and court representation to underprivileged individuals. David was also a member of the 2010 University of Calgary Gale Cup moot team where he received intensive advocacy training and competed nationally for the University of Calgary.

David began his legal career at the City of Calgary’s Law Department. David’s practice emphasized litigation work where he focused on defending the City on civil suits, as well as sitting as a bylaw prosecutor. At the City David was frequently in front of the court and in his capacity as a prosecutor conducted over 100 bylaw trials.

In 2012, David accepted an opportunity to practice in the area of family law and joined Soby Boyden Lenz LLP. David has exclusively practiced in family law since that date and has gained significant experience in a wide variety of areas within the family law field. David has successfully negotiated and advocated for parenting and custody in both high conflict and amicable situations, including mobility applications. He has dealt with a wide variety of child and spousal support (alimony) issues including high income earners, corporate income and in loco paretis (step-parent) situations. David has successfully negotiated numerous divorce and common law relationship property settlements amicably, with and without the assistance of mediators and arbiters, as well as utilizing the courts to favourably fight for his client’s rights. David has prepared several pre-nuptial and cohabitation agreements for clients to both protect client’s assets or ensure a fair division in case the worse should happen. David has dealt with international and jurisdictional issues. David has experience in domestic violence situations including Emergency Protection Orders (EPO), restraining orders, and involvement with Child and Family Services (CFS).

David is dedicated to assisting his clients’ reach lasting resolutions in all areas of family law. He believes in utilizing negotiation, mediation, as well as the Courts to achieve their goals, while always being mindful of cost effectiveness. David prides himself on being able to respectfully manage what can sometimes be difficult and emotional matters. Clients find David to be honest and professional in his demeanor, with a logical and analytical approach from his engineering background. David believes the best way to resolve family law problems is to apply a cost-effective business approach to assist client in pushing through the difficult emotions and assisting them to reach the best long-term outcomes.

David has successful appeared for clients in all levels of the court in Alberta including the Provincial Court of Alberta, the Court of Queen’s Bench, and the Alberta Court of Appeal.

When not assisting clients, David enjoys living life to the fullest. David is regularly trying new activities and sports as well as travelling the world. David is also passionate about helping out those in his community. David is a very active volunteer with Calgary Legal Guidance (CLG) and has been recognized for his dedication. David was the recipient of the 2017 Alan D. Hunter volunteer of the year award.  David also remains involved with helping law students at the University of Calgary and Student Legal Assistance.
