Alex Weis

Calgary, Alberta, Canada

As a former businessman and professional athlete, Alex Weis brings a wealth of diverse skills and perspectives to Soby Boyden Lenz LLP. He grew up in Calgary, Alberta. In 1997 he attended the University of Calgary, working on his undergraduate studies while playing on the University’s Varsity basketball team. In 1999 Alex moved to Europe to play professional basketball with UKJ SUBA in St. Polten, Austria. Upon returning in 2002, he completed his undergraduate work, earning a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) from the University of Calgary while working as a personal trainer.  In 2007, as the Director and Head of Human Resources, for the Innovative Health Group (now INLIV), Alex completed his Master’s Degree (M.A.) in Strategic Studies. He wrote his thesis on counterterrorism, sitting on several committees during his graduate studies.

In 2009, Alex moved to Ontario and, in 2012, he earned his Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the University of Ottawa, writing a major paper on spousal support and post-separation increases in income. During his time at the University of Ottawa, Alex was a member of the Business Law Student’s Society and the Canadian Lawyers for International Human Rights.

Alex’s passion for family law was ignited when he was given an opportunity to Intern with Soby Boyden Lenz LLP in the winter of 2011. He was invited back several months later as a summer student, before beginning his articles in 2012. Alex enjoys the high level of client-contact that comes with working in family law, as well as the ability to make a difference in people’s lives. Alex was called to the bar in August of 2013.

Alex has advocated at the Court of Queen’s Bench and Provincial court; successfully representing clients in contested matters and Special Chambers Applications.  His assertive style and presence is motivated by a desire to maximize results for his clients while providing the greatest value. He has taken courses in Alternative Dispute Resolution and understands its importance in helping resolve conflicts.

Alex is an avid outdoorsman. He has sea-kayaked the Broken Islands off the coast of Vancouver Island,  ascended several of the Rocky Mountains and downhill mountain-biked throughout Alberta, British Columbia and the United States. As a personal trainer, Alex led groups of fitness enthusiasts on many outdoor excursions, from multi-day hiking trips, to snowshoeing in Kananaskis country. Alex also enjoys resistance training and power-lifting.
