Born and raised in rural Alberta, Robert (Bob) Boyden graduated with
a B.A. with distinction from the University of Alberta in 1974. He attended
Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto, graduating with a LL.B. in 1977. He
articled with the firm of McCaffery and Company, and was called to the
Alberta Bar in 1978. Bob remained with that firm as an associate and partner
until 1986, when he, John Soby and Elaine Lenz formed the partnership
of Soby Boyden Lenz. In 2004 Bob was appointed as Queen’s Counsel.
Bob has instructed the Law Society of Alberta Bar Admission Course for
13 years, is a member of the Law Society’s mentor program, and serves
on the audit subcommittee. He has presented a number of papers to and
acted as an instructor at programs for the Legal Education Society of
Alberta, the Canadian Bar Association, the Alberta Civil Trial Lawyer’s
Association, the University of Calgary Faculty of Law and the Calgary
Legal Support Staff Association. A member of the Canadian Bar Association,
Bob has served on the executive as chair of the family law subsection,
and as an Alberta branch council member. Bob has served for 6 years as a member of the University of Calgary Senate and 4 years as the Senate’s representative to the University’s Board of Governors.
A member of the Rotary Club of Calgary South, Bob has been a director
and has chaired a number of the club’s committees. He will serve as President of the club from July, 2009 through June 2010. He has also served
as a parent representative and chairman of the Choral Music Association
of Calgary, and as a director of Parents Anonymous/Children’s Cottage.
Bob approaches resolution of family law issues from a multi-faceted perspective.
He considers and supports the use of processes from mediation
to litigation in resolving the
presenting issues in a time and cost-effective manner.
Bob’s recreational activities include fly fishing, cross-country
skiing, golf, reading and home improvement. He is married and has two
daughters.
